Exploring Creativity, Building Confidence

Artsy Fartsy Saturdays, led by local artist Cathy Barney, was a way to welcome marginalized elementary and middle schoolers into a safe space where they could build self-confidence, develop the ability to work effectively in teams, and explore their creativity.

The Milford Miami Township Chamber of Commerce is proud to support Artsy Fartsy Saturdays as an important program to build community and adds to the future economic development potential of our area (and others) by opening these students’ eyes to new opportunities and possibilities. Artsy Fartsy Saturdays demonstrates that art can transform lives and build rich, authentic community, connecting people who may not ordinarily gather. It shapes young lives by nurturing their voices, providing creative opportunities and the chance to see themselves as architects of their own lives.

This book, supported by funding from the Ohio Arts Council, not only tells the story of the program, but includes a tool kit of lesson plans, tips, forms, parent letters, and surveys so others can launch an Artsy Fartsy Saturdays program in their communities.

This movie, a companion piece to the book, highlights the success of the Artsy Fartsy Saturdays program in video taken throughout the 10-year program. In students’ own words, they explain how this program made a difference in their lives. Watch until the end, when you will see what those same, now-grown-up students are doing today.
